CMR – Functional Medicine to Cure Diabetes, Obesity and Fatigue On Dr. Oz 8/8/2012

Dr. Oz has assembled a team of four doctors to talk about a new approach to treating and curing disease today. It is called functional medicine and the guest doctors are Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Wendy Warner, Dr. David Perlmutter, and Dr. Susan Blum. Functional medicine is a new trend that actually looks at a person’s overall health and treats multiple diseases at once instead of the old cookie cutter approach where each symptom was a different problem. This show was originally aired on January 13 of this year and you can see our full recap by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

I have great respect and deep gratitude for the work of Dr. Susan Blum. In my opinion, she has saved my life and restored my health. Since I first met with Dr. Blum, in November of 2008, I have lost 100 lbs, dropped my total cholesterol by over 30% and increased my HDL’s (the good cholesterol) by over 25%.

Because of her wisdom and guidance I have changed my eating habits and increased my physical energy which has made it easy to exercise regularly. My resting heart rate had dropped from the 82 BPM to 54 BPM and my cardio-vascular conditioning (VO2 Max) is in the top 5% for 50 year-olds and I’m 70 years old.

My work with Susan is ongoing even though I now live in Colorado. I get my blood work done here and consult with her by phone. She helps me keep my focus on health, makes recommendations for supplements and notes any changes in my numbers.

What is so special about Dr. Blum is that she focuses on health, good eating and positive lifestyle. She has not only helped me lose weight and get in shape, but she has helped me avoid my family history of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

I have recommended many people to take advantage of her services and to receive the great information she puts in her newsletters. You can tell she is passionate about what she does and very effective in the way she does it. And, she has gathered a strong team around her. She will continue to be my most trusted medical and health advisor for the long haul.

I was introduced to Dr. Susan Blum by a friend who had been able to eliminate a life long chronic condition that limited her actives. Although I was in good health, I was approaching menopause and traditional medicine was not equipped to answer my questions.

Dr. Blum conducted a thorough 90 minute patient intake during which we discussed my health, my life style, my family’s medical history and my overall health goals. She ordered a set of labs which revealed I was very deficient in Vitamin D, and had a condition known as Hashimoto’s disease. Although I had regular physicals with a terrific internist, I was not aware of either of these conditions.

Dr. Blum explained the nature of each one and addressed them through diet, life style and supplements. The Vitamin D deficiency was mitigated in 3 months, and my numbers for the Hashimoto’s disease continue to improve without any medication.

As I consider the inevitable challenges of aging I am more certain then ever, that good health can be best supported with the mind/body approach that is the hallmark of Dr. Blum’s work. I consider Dr. Blum a part of my wellness team however I also know that I can turn to her for the latest research, along with alternatives to traditional treatments, for any health matter that might arise.

914 INC. – Your Work Diet Is Killing You

Fast food is easy when you’re rushed, but it’s hurting your health—and your company’s insurance premiums. Still, there might be a way to save both.
For six years, Joe Perera worked as an accountant in Manhattan and spent long hours and late nights on the job. During tax season, when at his busiest, lunch was “pizza and cupcakes” and dinner was greasy, high-calorie fare ordered in from neighborhood restaurants and eaten hastily at his desk.

I came to Dr. Blum after several attempts (and over 10 years) with other doctors to balance my hormones and thyroid issues. I tried everything from diet, to bio-identical hormones, to supplements, to birth control pills. I went to a noted womenʼs clinic that seemed to help temporarily, but then the same symptoms would return. Nothing was working, and the birth control pills I had started due to heavy and continuous bleeding, were actually causing a whole new set of symptoms! I wasnʼt sleeping well, had very heavy bleeding, severe cramping, acne, weight gain, and mood swings with anxiety and depression. The symptoms had gradually become worse, with only a few months of relief at a time, when new doctors had new ideas. Dr. Blum was able to figure out and diagnose my issues that multiple other doctors did not either consider or understand. Through many questions, tests and comprehensive blood work she diagnosed me with Graves Disease and found that I have an elevated, genetic risk for celiacʼs disease. Through other tests she found and explained that I have high levels of mercury and lead in my body which combined with my gluten sensitivity contributes to the auto-immune issues I was experiencing. In addition, through a genetic liver test, she explained that my liver does not break down and detoxify estrogen, pesticides and metals very well. This information, the supplements and the simple changes to my diet that she recommended have changed my life. ALL of my symptoms have gone! I am still figuring out how to void my body of the metals and repair the flora in my gut, but I lost the weight I had gained, I have no mood swings or anxiety or depression, my struggle with acne is gone, and I sleep better than I have in many years! Over 10 years of struggling, and she helped me alleviate my symptoms in less than a year! Dr. Blumʼs functional medicine approach, her intelligent, holistic philosophy and her personal care are absolutely curative. I recommend her center to everyone who needs help with eating healthy, stress relief, and most of all help to feel and live a healthy, long life!
Thank you so much Dr. Blum!

I first met Dr. Susan Blum almost 5 years ago, and today I can’t imagine my life without her. When I first went to see Dr. Blum, I was only 40, but had gone into early menopause. I was frustrated because I had been trying for years to get my hormones under control but no one was able to help me. Under the suggestion of my wonderful Pharmacist Phil Altman, I called Dr. Susan Blum. I left my first meeting with Dr. Blum feeling so confident that I finally found someone who was really going to be able to help me. She has such a positive energy and really takes the time to get to know you and understand your issues. In less than a year, Dr. Blum determined that I had a wheat allergy, which I never knew I had, balanced my hormones, and I was feeling great. Everything was finally working the way it was suppose to. In fact, things were working so well, that we had the unexpected surprise of becoming pregnant. I never thought it was possible. We had to go though so much fertility to have our other two children, that this was truly a “Blum” blessing. I have seen Dr. Blum many times over the last few years for a variety of different health issues that come up. I often describe her as a “Doctor Detective” because when no one else seems to be able to help, or just wants to give you a quick fix, Dr. Blum will not give up until she uncovers the source of your the problem and then gives you healthy solutions to get you feeling great again. She truly is the best doctor I have ever know, and feel so lucky that I found her.
Our son is 2 years old already, and when I say I can’t imagine my life without Dr. Susan Blum…I really can’t!
