Thank you for your interest in the Mentorship Program at Blum Center for Health.  Susan Blum, MD, MPH has created this program to offer Functional Medicine practitioners with an MD, DO or ND degree, the opportunity to see our Functional Medicine practice in action from start to finish.  We envision this program as an important opportunity for clinical training supervised by Dr. Blum, as you work to be Certified in Functional Medicine.  In addition to the clinical opportunity, we will share the practice management tools that have allowed us to be one of the most successful Functional Medicine Centers in the country.  

Upon completion of the program, we will offer you a Blum Center for Health Functional Medicine Training Certificate, as proof that you completed the mentorship program with us.


  • Learn management of complex chronic illness from an expert first hand
  • Review use of timeline and matrix and apply as needed
  • Review treatment plan and follow up program for each patient
  • Review use of supplements and nutritional protocols
  • Review labs in context with each patient and review functional testing in general
  • Observe Dr. Blum’s daily schedule in action with patient flow throughout the office
  • In addition to Dr. Blum, we have a large clinical staff of 2 Physicians, 1 Nurse Practitioner, and 1 Functional Nutritionist, all ready to support you and answer questions.


  • Use of EMR and practice management software  
  • New patient scheduling:  managing calls/inquiries, forms, cancellation policy, deposits, booking, wait lists
  • Cash flow:  Fee for service model, with printed insurance forms provided at time of visit.  Review payments, policies, pricing.  
  • Schedule management to keep all practitioners full and busy
  • PR and marketing:  role for growing the practice and filling programs.
  • Inventory management for supplements
  • Online program/health coaches
  • Our entire staff, including Center Manager, Patient Care Coordinator, Medical Assistant, Media and Communications Manager, Research Manager and 3 Front Office Administrators are all ready to support you and answer questions and share what we have learned since we opened 5 years ago:  invaluable!



  • Monday 10-5 and Tuesday 9-1:  patient consultations:  sit in with Susan Blum, MD, or other Blum physician (if desired) based on clinical case schedule that day.  
  • Tuesday afternoon:  
    • 1-2 pm lunch break
    • 2-5 PM:
      • Meet with Dr. Blum for 2 hours; clinical questions, cases, management of Center.  
      • 1 hour to focus on Center Operations or Practice Management:  meet with other Blum Center staff
  • Wednesday:  
    • 9-1:  Dr. Blum does not see patients on Wednesdays.  This is a flexible morning depending on your interests and can be planned in advance or once on site.  The following options can be combined into a varied morning:
      • See patients with one of the other practitioners
      • Practice Management:  time with admin or support staff
      • Weekly meditation class:  10-10:30 am
      • Weekly PR/Media meeting with Dr. Blum.  Learn about ongoing marketing and PR activity.  10:30-11:30
    • 1-3 PM:  Join the weekly medical meeting with the team and Dr. Blum, to review cases, discuss protocols, and new programs.  This is a great learning opportunity.
    • 3-5 pm:  wrap up:  Dedicated time with Dr. Blum to review the time together and answer any and all questions.  
      • Plan for the next phase of Off-site mentorship.  
  • Additional Options:
    • We offer programs and classes in our BlumKitchen throughout every month, including cooking classes and pantry makeovers.  You are welcome to include these at no charge, if your visit coincides with these scheduled events.  Our calendar is planned for months in advance, therefore you are welcome to plan your visit around these classes if desired.

    • For out-of-town guests, we have a Blum Center rate at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center, 10 minutes away.  We can help with reservations, or you can call directly 212-939-5500 and identify yourself as our guest.


By completing the onsite mentorship program with Dr. Blum, you will be given the opportunity to continue a remote supervision program.  This can include email and skype support and will be personalized for you during your Mentorship, based on your interests.  



  • You have attended at least 1 IFM Advanced Practice Module
  • Preference will be given to those who have attended AFMCP
  • To sit in on medical visits with Dr. Blum, you must be a MD, DO or ND.  Our Nurse Practitioner will soon be offering a Mentorship program for NP, PA, DC’s, and our Nutritionist will soon be offering a program for RD, MA, MSN.  If you are interested in either of these, please contact
  • You will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement and Non-Compete prior to spending time with us.  This can be forwarded in advance.
  • A $500 deposit is required to reserve your time.  This is necessary because Dr. Blum will need to plan her schedule accordingly.  It will be refundable up to 2 weeks before the training.
