TWO YEARS IN: WHAT WE’VE LEARNED ABOUT MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS WITH GLP-1S

January 22, 2026

When we launched our Medical Weight Loss Program at Blum Center for Health two years ago, GLP-1 medications were already changing how people approached weight loss. But here’s what we’ve discovered since then: lower dosing glp-1 = happier patients.

THE SHIFT TO “LOW AND SLOW”

The buzz heading into 2026? Microdosing. After working with patients throughout 2025, we’ve seen that lower doses often produce better outcomes with fewer downsides.

What does this look like in practice? People lose weight more gradually, which means their bodies don’t trigger the starvation response that can lead to hair loss, crushing fatigue, and muscle wasting, which are signs that weight is coming off too quickly. And those gut side effects like abdominal pain, nausea and severe constipation? These are minimal or non-existent on the lower dosing.  People can stay on their regular routines without interruption.

Perhaps most importantly, when it comes time to discontinue the medication, the transition is smoother. Your body hasn’t been shocked into rapid change, so maintaining your new weight feels more natural.   As the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race.

BEYOND THE SCALE: THE LOCUS OF CONTROL

What we didn’t fully anticipate two years ago was the psychological shift that happens when you lose weight sustainably. We’re talking about something deeper than confidence.

When you’re not battling constant side effects, when you’re actually building new habits rather than white-knuckling through cravings because the food noise is quiet, something shifts. You feel more in control of your weight, your mood, your entire outlook on life. This sense of self-efficacy – that feeling of “I can do this” – ripples out into other areas.

Melissa Rapoport sees it in her health coaching sessions. If you start the program looking beyond the number on the scale, you can find yourself addressing stress patterns, improving sleep, and even making career changes. Success breeds success!

WHAT HASN’T CHANGED: THE MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH

GLP-1s remain just one piece of the puzzle. These medications quiet the “food noise” and reduce cravings, creating space for real behavioral change. But sustainable weight loss still requires addressing the root causes of metabolic imbalance.

Our approach continues to emphasize:

  • Functional Medicine Testing: Blood work and often gut testing to understand what’s actually happening in your body.
  • Body Composition Monitoring: Using our InBody scanner to ensure you’re losing fat while maintaining or even building muscle mass
  • Lifestyle Medicine: Addressing gut health, hormone balance, stress, nutrition, and movement
  • Health Coaching: Personalized support to create sustainable long-term changes

This is why our patients successfully maintain their weight loss after discontinuing medication, while national data shows that people who stop GLP-1s without lifestyle changes regain approximately two-thirds of their lost weight.

READY TO TRANSFORM YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

After two years of refining our approach, we know what works: patience, personalization, and addressing the whole picture. If you’re tired of quick fixes that don’t last, or if you’ve tried GLP-1 medications elsewhere without the support to sustain your results, we’d love to talk with you.

Our low-and-slow method combined with root-cause functional medicine gives you the tools to not just lose weight, but to keep it off and feel empowered in the process. Speak with our New Patient Coordinator today to start your journey toward sustainable weight loss and lasting wellbeing.
