CMR – Functional Medicine to Cure Diabetes, Obesity and Fatigue On Dr. Oz 8/8/2012

Dr. Oz has assembled a team of four doctors to talk about a new approach to treating and curing disease today. It is called functional medicine and the guest doctors are Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Wendy Warner, Dr. David Perlmutter, and Dr. Susan Blum. Functional medicine is a new trend that actually looks at a person’s overall health and treats multiple diseases at once instead of the old cookie cutter approach where each symptom was a different problem. This show was originally aired on January 13 of this year and you can see our full recap by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

I have great respect and deep gratitude for the work of Dr. Susan Blum. In my opinion, she has saved my life and restored my health. Since I first met with Dr. Blum, in November of 2008, I have lost 100 lbs, dropped my total cholesterol by over 30% and increased my HDL’s (the good cholesterol) by over 25%.

Because of her wisdom and guidance I have changed my eating habits and increased my physical energy which has made it easy to exercise regularly. My resting heart rate had dropped from the 82 BPM to 54 BPM and my cardio-vascular conditioning (VO2 Max) is in the top 5% for 50 year-olds and I’m 70 years old.

My work with Susan is ongoing even though I now live in Colorado. I get my blood work done here and consult with her by phone. She helps me keep my focus on health, makes recommendations for supplements and notes any changes in my numbers.

What is so special about Dr. Blum is that she focuses on health, good eating and positive lifestyle. She has not only helped me lose weight and get in shape, but she has helped me avoid my family history of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

I have recommended many people to take advantage of her services and to receive the great information she puts in her newsletters. You can tell she is passionate about what she does and very effective in the way she does it. And, she has gathered a strong team around her. She will continue to be my most trusted medical and health advisor for the long haul.

I was introduced to Dr. Susan Blum by a friend who had been able to eliminate a life long chronic condition that limited her actives. Although I was in good health, I was approaching menopause and traditional medicine was not equipped to answer my questions.

Dr. Blum conducted a thorough 90 minute patient intake during which we discussed my health, my life style, my family’s medical history and my overall health goals. She ordered a set of labs which revealed I was very deficient in Vitamin D, and had a condition known as Hashimoto’s disease. Although I had regular physicals with a terrific internist, I was not aware of either of these conditions.

Dr. Blum explained the nature of each one and addressed them through diet, life style and supplements. The Vitamin D deficiency was mitigated in 3 months, and my numbers for the Hashimoto’s disease continue to improve without any medication.

As I consider the inevitable challenges of aging I am more certain then ever, that good health can be best supported with the mind/body approach that is the hallmark of Dr. Blum’s work. I consider Dr. Blum a part of my wellness team however I also know that I can turn to her for the latest research, along with alternatives to traditional treatments, for any health matter that might arise.
